Kettering Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Northamptonshire, and around 25 miles southeast of Leicester, is the town of Kettering. The first written reference of Kettering dates from 956 AD as 'Kateringes', meaning 'the place of Ketter's people'. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as 'Cateringe' at which point it was a small village with a population of around 150. It had developed into a town by 1227, the year in which Henry III granted Kettering a market charter. At the heart of Kettering is the church of St Peter and St Paul, Kettering's oldest building. A record of the church stretches back as early as 1219, however the main fabric of the building we see today was rebuilt in the 15th century. It is Grade I listed, with a spire reaching 55 metres/180ft above ground. In 1778 Kettering's first shoe manufacturer was founded by Thomas Gotch. This was the beginning of what would be the main industry in the town by the 19th century, much like the neighbouring town of Northampton. Shoe and boot making would eventually wind down in the 2nd half of the 20th century due to overseas competition. In 1921 Wicksteed Park opened in Kettering, just southeast of the town centre.
