Borne from a hot take that circulated around Twitter towards the end of December last year, a post generated a momentary bout of discourse among the masses on Twitter. It’s a perfect reflection of this growing attitude I’ve been seeing or hearing about that if you’re somehow not gay, transgender, or queer, you don’t really have a place in the fandom, or your place here is less than that of the LGBTQ banner, like you're a second class citizen or something. And while that might not have been the posters original intent, others seem to very readily share in that kind of a mind-set. The smug dismissive attitude and openly denigrating those that did not fit their paradigm worldview did little to dispel that notion to me. I personally know enough people that fall under the LGBTQ but also those who are straight, bi, or cisgender women who are also furries, so let this video serve as a reminder that the Furry Fandom is open to all (except pedophiles and zoophiles), and that all are and should be welcomed here, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We shouldn’t be arbitrarily balkanizing the fandom to cater to one particular denomination of people or another. As for the posters likely frustration at seeing some opinions they didn't like hit their feed, it's Twitter: anyone can say anything. I mean, they certainly did...lol The other misconception is that there are a lot of furries today that just kind of assume or believe that the furry fandom was somehow made by the gay / queer community, or that it was made specifically for the gay / queer community. They conflate the two for some reason, even though there's a pretty clear distinction between both. Yes, the fandom of today is very diverse and openly LGBTQ. Yes, the late Mark Merlino was gay, very visibly so as one of the founding members of the fandom, but people often forget that there were others, and I repeatedly see the demographics of the fandom being predominantly straight white nerds that came from the sci-fi conventions in the early years. There were some very noticeable exceptions to this among them, but they were uncommon and unique in their own right– obviously, this changed a lot in just a few decades since then. The Furry Fandom of the past isn't the Furry Fandom of today, and you know what? That's alright. At least, I don't see that much of an issue with it. I don’t know why that should even matter at this point, but, hey, maybe it’s something to brag about / be proud of, or somehow lend more legitimacy to their words when engaging with others. I wouldn’t know – I’m more interested in preserving some semblance of historical accuracy. While I’d started work on this much earlier, life and work sorta got in the way, eating up all my time. But, glad to at least release this before I moved on to more recent or semi-recent events as I get to play a little catch-up.
