Open and Minimally-Invasive Colon Surgery Demonstrations

This video shows a demonstration of an open colon surgery as well as a minimally-invasive colon surgery. Colon surgery, also referred to as a colectomy, is a procedure to remove all or part of the colon. This may be recommended to treat conditions of the colon such as: Colon cancer Chron’s disease Ulcerative colitis Bowel obstruction And more During open colon surgery, a long incision (cut) is made in the abdomen in order to expose the colon. Once the incision has been made, the surgeon then frees it from surrounding tissue and removes either a portion of the colon, or all of it. Minimally-invasive colon surgery achieves the same outcome as a traditional open surgery, but with much smaller incisions. During this procedure, three small incisions are made in the abdomen instead of one long one: 1. The surgeon inserts a small video camera through one of the incisions, so that he or she can see what is happening internally from a video screen in the operating room (OR). 2. Surgical tools are inserted through another incision, and used to free the colon from surrounding tissue. 3. Once freed, the colon is brought out through the third incision, so that the surgeon can remove all of part of it before reinserting it back inside the body. Although minimally-invasive colon surgery may reduce pain and recovery time, it is not appropriate for all patients.
