A fictionalized telling of past events, Painkiller examines some of the origins and aftermath of the opioid crisis in America, highlighting the stories of perpetrators, victims, and truth-seekers whose lives are forever altered by the invention of OxyContin. Richard Sackler, owner of Purdue Pharma decides to market a new drug in order to save his family's business from bankruptcy, exploiting the human space between 'pain' and 'pleasure.' His plan is a success and met with booming sales, but at what cost? Here I share my thoughts on this series and how it's message can cause us to stop and rethink the role of big pharma in our society, and the medications they market to the public.
