The church dedicated to Saint George was founded by the bishop of Parma, a native of Verona, Italy. The prelate chose land on the bank of the river Agide, enjoying the protection of Emperor Henry III. In 1112, the bishop expelled the monks and entrusted the collegiate church to Augustinian monks. The building was severely damaged in the terrible earthquake that struck the entire region in 1117. The slow spiritual decline of the monastery was halted in 1442, when a wealthy congregation bought the church and rebuilt the entire monastery. The new church was completed in 1543, after the consecration of the twelve magnificent interior altars. No traces of the previous building remain, except for part of the first bell tower. On 6 December 1668 Pope Clement XI suppressed the congregation and the church was handed over to the Augustinian nuns, whose monastery was suppressed in 1807 by Napoleon. The church was made a parish church on 2 March 1874 by Pope Pius IX. The construction of the new tower began in 1557, with a massive base of 10.4 metres per side and a masonry second only to the cathedral. The beautiful artefact was made of tuff, but had to stop at 39 metres, as the military imposed a maximum height due to its proximity to the city walls. The first bells were installed in the 16th century and replaced in 1776 by a new concert by the famous Giuseppe Ruffini, who made four new bells, in musical harmony with the original bell. One of the bells is the minor seventh of the diatonic scale, which allows for a change of key during the concert.
