Like shadows in the golden glow of pagodas in Yangon, sex workers are hiding in Bogyoke market, Chinatown and Sule Road, where the lights pour into their hunting eyes at night. In Myanmar, the penalties for sex workers are tough according to the 68-year-old Suppression of Prostitution Act, which only applies to women. While customers, however, are not prosecuted, female sex worker can be punished with up to three years in prison. The male sex workers are criminalized by section 377 of the Penal Code, which is usually called the “homosexuality law”. The male sex workers can be punished with life-long exile or imprisonment of ten years because of their “carnal intercourse against the order of nature”. Even so, poverty drives many Myanmar fathers and mothers to sell sex for their family.
