Transportation is the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States. Replacing diesel school buses with electric buses, can make a big difference. Dominion Energy is launching this nationally-leading program to support Virginia school districts' transition of their school bus fleet from diesel to electric. It'll improve air quality and the health of children in our communities. The program also explores battery storage capabilities by using the huge bus batteries to help enhance grid reliability. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) received its first electric bus-- funded by a grant from Dominion Energy that will result in an initial deployment of 50 buses across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The bus is the first of eight for FCPS with delivery of the remaining seven expected by the end of January. Other Northern Virginia school districts that will receive electric school buses include Loudoun and Prince William Counties and the City of Alexandria. Under the program, Dominion Energy offsets the additional costs so that school districts pay no more for an electric bus than they would for a diesel model. The required charging infrastructure was funded by and will be maintained by Dominion Energy. Electric school buses will benefit the entire Washington, D.C. region by reducing carbon emissions, serving as a resource for national emergency planning efforts, and provide stability and capacity to the grid with meeting increasing energy demands. These Thomas-built buses will join FCPS’ current fleet of roughly 1,625 diesel-fueled buses and will help reduce operation and maintenance costs. Dominion Energy is committed to lowering carbon emissions and helping our customers do the same, and harnessing new, innovations like our Electric School Bus program is key. The largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States is transportation. By partnering with this industry, we not only help the environment, we help school systems save money.
