Two Gouverneur students were released to their parents Thursday after being taken into custody in connection with threats made on a bathroom wall that prompted school officials to evacuate students to the community center. Village Police Chief Laurina M. Greenhill said the two students were taken into custody as persons of interest. No charges have been filed. “They were later released to their parents and the investigation is continuing,” the chief said in an emailed statement. Gouverneur Central Superintendent Lauren F. French would not confirm or deny to the Times that the written threat was about a bomb. At about 7:25 a.m. a village police officer was at the high school main office speaking with a school administrator about an unrelated matter when they were approached by a student who reported finding a handwritten threat in a boy’s bathroom, police said. “Several messages of a threatening nature were found written on the wall of a boy’s bathroom,” police said. “A building search was conducted and no weapons were found. Additional measures and interviews determined no evidence of a credible threat.” Ms. French said the school was placed on lockdown following an evacuation of the students through a secured rear entrance of the school.
