I just got back from a grueling, high-altitude prospecting trip into the headwaters of the North Cascades, and I think I’ve found the source of something incredible. Earlier this summer, I discovered Listwanite float down in the creek that looked like it had bands of gold under the microscope. Today, I’m hiking straight up the 45-degree jungle slopes to find the bedrock source—and I’m trying not to get eaten by a bear or "cliffed out" along the way! I’m hunting for that signature rusty-orange weathering that hides the vibrant green and blue minerals underneath. What we found on the mountain: Hydrothermal Alteration: We found the contact zone where magma once shot through the fault, altering the local serpentine into beautiful, mineral-rich Listwanite. Glacial Striations: Textbook examples of the power of nature, with rocks polished and scratched by ancient ice moving down the valley. Asbestos & Serpentine: Identifying the original host rocks and the "needle" crystals of Actinolite. The 100lb "Jade" Boulder: I stumbled across a massive, glaciated stone that looks and feels like high-quality Jade. I couldn't pack the whole thing out, but I brought back a piece to test. 💎 The Rock Shop Reveal: "Blue Tiger Stripe" Back at the shop, we weighed the pack—60 lbs of rock hauled down the mountain! Now, the real fun begins as we put these specimens under the saw. Vibrant Blue Minerals: I’ve never seen Listwanite this blue. Is it copper? Or something else? Under the microscope, it looks like the clouds of Jupiter. Blue Tiger Stripe: A stunning patterned rock that combines deep orange and electric blue. The Jade Test: We slabbed the green mystery rock and put a light to it. Is it translucent enough to be true Jade? I need your help to identify this one! ⏱️ Video Timestamps: 0:00 – The "Death-Defying" Hike Begins 2:15 – Bear Country & Mountain Spring Water 4:30 – Finding the Bedrock Source & Glacial Striations 6:45 – The Contact Zone: Ultra-Green Mineralization 9:20 – Serpentine vs. Listwanite: How it Forms 11:50 – THE JADE BOULDER: Did I find the motherlode? 14:10 – Weighing the Haul: 60 lbs of Rock 16:30 – Slabbing the "Blue Tiger Stripe" Specimen 19:15 – Microscope View: Hunting for Gold & Sulfides 21:00 – The Jade Light Test: What do you think? ⚒️ Support the Channel: Check out the microscope clip I used in this video to look for gold! 🔗 Get the Microscope Here: Let me know in the comments: Is that 100lb boulder actually Jade?
