Dr. Michael Arnold has been training with robotic assisted surgery since his residency. “The surgeon sits at a console right next to that instrument and controls all the movements of the robot. So, there is no independent action of the robot. If you were to take your hands out of the robot or move your head away, the robot instantly stops where it is. So there's no accidental motion.” While robotic surgery has been used in pediatric urology cases, Dr. Arnold is working to expand its use for pediatric general surgery. “The more you adopt a tool or the more you use it, the better you get at it. So then you're able to use it in a wider application.” Dr. Arnold said the main benefit of adding robots is for the surgeries that otherwise couldn’t be done minimally invasively. “Your incision to take the specimen out of a patient, you know, is a couple of centimeters as opposed to several inches. That's a big difference there…. That’s a difference in their pain level, which means we don't need to give quite as much pain medicine. They get up, they get out of bed, and they walk sooner. When they're walking sooner, they have less complications of pneumonia. Smaller incisions have less chance of getting a wound infection.” The robot provides advanced instrumentation, 3D vision, and wrist articulation. “When the robot lets you do that operation, when you can see better, when you can move better in a more natural way, when you can reach the structures without struggling to do so, I think they're getting a safer operation,” said Dr. Arnold. Giving patients more minimally invasive options than ever before.
