DR Congo: Burundi Reportedly Withdraws Troops, M23 Marches Towards Butembo | Firstpost Africa | N18G Reports suggest that Burundi has reportedly begun withdrawing its troops from the DR Congo’s east, in a fresh blow to Kinshasa. This is just days after Rwanda-backed M23 rebels captured South Kivu province’s capital Bukavu. Burundi had deployed around 10,000 soldiers in the South Kivu province. However, they failed to defend the territory in South Kivu province. Meanwhile, M23 has continued to advance further south from Bukavu. They are also reportedly moving towards Butembo, another major city in the east. DR Congo’s neighbour Uganda has also sent troops into the country, leading to fears of a larger regional war. Furthermore, pressure seems to be mounting on Rwanda to give up its support for the M23 rebels. Will the conflict in DR Congo further spiral into a regional conflict?
