What is Pfizer? Pfizer is one of the largest American pharmaceutical companies. It is ranked at position 61 on the Fortune 500 list of the largest companies by revenue and has its headquarters in New York City at 235E 42nd Street. It has been manufacturing chemicals and medicines for over 170 years and has a presence in more than 60% of the world. History of Pfizer In 1849, a German American chemist by the name Charles Pfizer and his cousin Charles F. Erhat, a confectioner, combined their skills to make a sweet antiparasitic drug called Santonin. Previously, Santonin was very bitter and unpalatable. The duo’s creation was an immediate success. Ever the inventive chemist, Pfizer expanded into the production of other drugs and products such as painkillers and preservatives that were in need during the Civil War. These included iodine, morphine, chloroform, and mercury. By 1880, the company was a leading producer of citric acid needed for soft drinks like Coca-cola and Pepsi. Citric acid and the blockbuster drug penicillin went on to be Pfizer’s biggest growth mediums through the 2nd World War, all the way into the ‘70s. In 1971, the central research division was established combining pharmaceutical, agricultural, and chemical research globally. Up until today, Pfizer is one of the leading global pharmaceuticals with the discovery of drugs. Where Does Pfizer Operate? Pfizer operates in many countries globally where it has its offices, laboratories, and other research and development facilities. These include Belgium, China, India, Mexico, Russia, Italy, Ireland, and others. All in all, it has 60 research facilities. In terms of market, the US makes up more than half of its revenue. The rest comes from all over the world, where Pfizer has a presence in 125 countries worldwide. Pfizer’s products are sold to hospitals, managed care organizations, employer groups, retailers, clinics, and directly to patients. It works with wholesale distributors such as McKesson, AmerisourceBergen, and Cardinal Health. Key People As of 2020, Pfizer’s executives include: Albert Bourla, DVM, Ph.D - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He is reshaping Pfizer to position itself as a global leader, more notably through the 2018 merge with European giant GlaxoSmithKline. Frank D’Amelio - Chief Financial Officer since 2007, Executive Vice President, Head of Global Supply and Business Operations. Mikael Dolsten, M.D, Ph.D - Chief Scientific Officer and President, Worldwide Research, Development. He has been advancing the company through leading small molecule science and medicine. Lidia Fonseca - Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Executive Vice-President. John Young - Group President and Chief Business Officer. Why Are They Important? Pfizer has discovered and developed some of the world’s most useful drugs in the treatments of various diseases and conditions.
