Craig Scott, M.P. (Toronto-Danforth) and Official Opposition Critic for Democratic and Parliamentary Reform questions the Conservatives on a loophole in the Unfair Elections Act. Craig's questioning CRTC lawyers confirmed a huge loophole in the Unfair Elections Act -- if political parties use their own internal services to conduct live calls, they can skirt the CRTC's reporting requirements. This is problematic - especially given the record of the Conservatives; for example we know from a 2013 Federal Court judgement that it was the central party database that was used to make voter-suppression calls (both live and automated). Note that some Conservatives are trying to say C-223 does not cover live calls. It does. Section 348.01 includes "live voice calls" as part of the definition of calls. The problem is that live calling by poltiical parties has been exempted.
