What is the HFA Affiliate program? Hi Everyone and welcome back to our music industry in 5 mins or less video series. I’m Rene Merideth the COO of Exploration Group and today we’re going to answer the question - What is the HFA Affiliate Program? Until the advent of the MLC, Harry Fox Agency (aka HFA) along with Music Reports were platforms that serviced and managed blanket licenses for DSPs enabling publishers to get paid for interactive streaming services Spotify or Deezer. Eventually, HFA and MRI expanded into managing license for services which used a multiple rights (or a bundle of rights) like MRI working with TikTok and HFA works with Facebook. In order for publishers to get paid for these rights and subsequently pay their songwriters, the publishers needed to sign up for HFA and MRI’s online portals and agree to the opt in licenses offered by each platform. Now with the MLC in place, the interactive streaming DSPs are licensing through them. A lot of people have thought that HFA & MRI were going to go away. However, that is not the case. These direct licenses and bundled licenses are still managed through HFA and MRI. There has been a change at Harry Fox Agency that you should be aware of. HFA has discontinued signing up music publishers to their portal unless they become Affiliate members with HFA. So what does this mean. It means that you have to fill out the application and have Harry Fox represent all of your mechanical licensing worldwide. Their affiliate program covers the US and foreign mechanical royalties. It also includes your YouTube representation and any direct mechanical licenses you may have done in the past. Effectively HFA becomes your exclusive mechanical licensing representative. HFA does take a commission of 11.5% for all the royalties they collect on your behalf. And they do charge a $100 non-refundable application fee. This does not hinder and does not interfere with signing up for the MLC. Even though the MLC and HFA do work together, the MLC has a separate database and separate royalty payout from HFA. It also doesn’t affect your ability to sign up for MRI and opt in to the licenses they offer. This change at HFA only affects your publishing if you do not already have access to the HFA portal. You should also be aware if you have any agreements in place already for sub-publishing or publishing administration of any of your mechanical rights in general. As with everything, there are pros and cons to this change depending upon your specific publishing situation. You should do your research at harryfox.com and reach out to them with any questions you have about your publishing before you apply.
