On the 19th December 2010, 25-year-old Joanna Yeates was reported missing from her Bristol home. On Christmas Day, less than a week later, her frozen body was discovered under piles of snow and leaves on a roadside verge. The nation was gripped by the police hunt for her killer; one of the largest murder investigations ever seen in the area. But although the story of Jo's death made international headlines, her killer was to be found closer to home. Early in the investigation, Jo's next-door neighbour Vincent Tabak, a Dutch national, offered police information in a bid to help the inquiry. He was, in fact, trying to divert their attention from himself. But police were suspicious of his behaviour and examined his alibi closely. DNA eventually sealed the case against him. Days before Crimewatch aired an appeal to find her killer in January 2011, police arrested him and the film was never broadcast. In October 2011 Vincent Tabak went on trial at Bristol Crown Court. Despite claiming that he strangled Jo by accident, he was found guilty of murder, in what police believe was a sexually motivated attack. Over ten months after Jo first vanished, her killer was sentenced to life in jail.
