Breastlink radiologist Dr. Tchaiko Parris talks about the different kind of breast biopsies a woman might receive if doctors find something abnormal on her mammogram. If doctors see calcium deposits with a suspicious morphology and distribution, doctors recommend a stereotactic core biopsy. The woman lies face down and her breasts go through an opening on the exam table. They doctors will then compress her breasts and take a picture, like a mammogram. They’ll take a radiograph of the specimen and send them off to the pathologist. If the mammogram shows a solid mass, doctors perform an ultrasound guided core biopsy. The woman lies on her back and doctors insert a needle into her breast, using ultrasound images to guide the needle to the suspicious mass. If the biopsy is positive, the patient receives a breast MRI. If it reveals more abnormalities, doctors recommend an MRI -guided core biopsy. The woman lies on her stomach with her breasts in a breast coil, which allows the doctors to target the abnormalities. When they’re finished, doctors leave a titanium tissue marker. It’s too small to be seen or felt, but it shows up on a mammogram and lets doctors know where the cancer is if they need to perform surgery.
