Based on the 1921 stage play by Eugene O'Neill and adapted by Frances Marion, the film was produced and directed by Clarence Brown and stands as a major achievement of early sound cinema. Starring Greta Garbo, Charles Bickford, George F. Marion, and Marie Dressler, Anna Christie is famous as Garbo’s first talking picture, promoted with the iconic slogan “Garbo Talks!”. Her performance was widely acclaimed, beginning with one of the most memorable opening lines in classic film history. The film was released in multiple versions, including English, German, and silent editions, and received Academy Award nominations for Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. As a 1930 release, Anna Christie entered the public domain in the United States on January 1, 2026, making it legal to watch, share, and preserve.
