Many Facets of K.G.Subramanayan- An Evening of Lectures 19 Aug 2016 Piramal Museum of Art, Mumbai With the demise of K.G.Subramanayan India has lost not only a great artist and writer but also an art educationist who brought art of different kinds closer to audiences of varied kinds. While most often, art works and writings available in the public domain construct the persona of the artist to a larger audience, in the case of K.G.Subramanyan, most people access his work through a personal connection, having had atleast some interaction with him in the course of their artistic journey. The manner in which his demise was mourned in social media by young art students, critics and art connoisseurs who shared personal anecdotes and experiences underscores the reach Manida, as K.G.S was fondly known, had until he passed away. This openness and eagerness to embrace the world also informed his artistic practice that evolved constantly with time and exposure to various visual traditions. Art historically speaking, Santiniketan educated K.G.S represents an important artistic bridge between the art that evolved in pre-independence India and the practices that came afterward. Extremely versatile and prolific, he belongs to the ‘lineage’ of artist-teachers such as Nandalal Bose, Binode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij who passed on to their students, not formulas, but fluid ways of seeing that could help them create their own independent language. ‘Many facets of K.G.Subramanayan’, a lecture series on K.G.S organised by Piramal Art Foundations, is an attempt to understand the artist’s life and work through presentations by scholars who have studied his work and artists who have personally interacted with him. The evening’s lectures will focus on K.G.Subramanyan’s visual language, his relation with other visual traditions, his foray into varied media, his role as a teacher and his role in shaping the art practice of India. Speakers 1) Rekha Rodwittiya – On K.G.S as a teacher and mentor 2) Lina Vincent Sunish- On the printmaking forays of K.G.S 3) Dr. Baishali Ghosh- On letters on art and craft written by K.G.S 4) Roobina Karode – On curating KGS show at KNMA.
