A hidden dragon. A forgotten legend. This Celtic folk ballad tells the story of Maude and the secret dragon of Mordiford… 🐉 The Dragon of Mordiford – A Celtic Folk Fantasy Ballad Step into a misty English woodland and discover the legend of Maude and her secret dragon. This original fantasy folk song tells a heartfelt story of friendship, loyalty and hidden magic, inspired by old British folklore and the mysterious tale of Mordiford’s dragon. From a cracked egg in autumn leaves to a lifelong bond, Maude raises a gentle green dragon in secret. As fear grows in the village and a hunter named Garstone is sent to stop the beast, the story takes a surprising turn… because some legends refuse to die. 🎬 The music video brings this story to life with cinematic visuals, showing Maude and the dragon growing up together, playful moments in the forest, and the mystery of the mist that still lingers today. 🎵 Lyrics highlight: "I still can hear your gentle call…" Is it just wind through the trees… or something more? The Story 1.In a field in Mordiford, a lone green dragon egg lay in a pile of leaves one bright autumnal morning. A crack appeared, and a tiny dragon snout poked through. With emerald scales, that glistened golden in the warm sunlight, it began to emerge. With deep golden eyes it blinked in the daylight. Tasting the air with its forked tongue it began to search for food. No bigger than a house cat, the fledging dragon hunted insects for food and curled it’s spiked tail around itself underneath a hedge for warmth at night. It was all alone. 2. A young girl named Maude, was out picking berries one day when she heard what sounded like a cat’s meow. She stumbled across the dragon! Fearlessly, Maude scooped up the wide eyed dragon, who gratefully cuddled into her arms. Maude gave it milk, and fish fro m the river Lugg, and they played hide and seek together. 3. As the dragon grew, so did Maude’s love for her friend. During the days, it would play in the woods, and drink and splash in local rivers. As it got bigger, so did it’s appetite. It’s claws and teeth had grown and it started to hunt local chickens and sheep. The locals began to notice… 4. One day in the family dining room, the dragon hiccupped and to everyone’s surprise let out a jet of fire! Maude was astonished. After the smoke cleared, a scorched table with glowing embers was all that remained. Maude’s father ordered the dragon live outside. Maude set up a nest in the woods for her friend that was now as big as a large dog. 5. Without Maude’s help, the dragon began to eat the easy pickings of the villager’s cattle and sheep. Leaving only the odd claw or scorch mark behind, the villagers weren’t happy. One night at a meeting they decided they wanted the dragon gone. Maude, cuddling her father, was in tears. 6. Remembering their hide and seek days, the dragon evaded capture for months by hiding, with it’s green scales blending effortlessly into the woods, and it’s webbed feet muffling its now weighty footsteps. Even when the villagers did find the dragon, it was now fully grown, standing 12 feet tall and it would fly off when the villagers got too close. 7. Eventually, the villagers hired a creative, mysterious, and daring man called Garstone, who was expert at dealing with dragon problems. He hid in a barrel by a stream where the dragon was known to drink. After days of waiting, the dragon landed to quench it’s thirst. Garstone launched out of the barrel and… the dragon was never seen by the villagers again. Garstone never revealed what happened. 8. To begin with, Maude was very upset, but was soon (and quite suddenly) seen smiling again. Although the dragon was never seen by the villagers again, an occasional claw or unexplained foot print was found in the woods. Maude would sometimes disappear for a morning, returning with windswept hair and a beaming smile on her face. A mist can still be seen above Haugh woods to this very day, but is it really mist, or dragon breath? 9. The legend of Maude and the dragon has a number of different endings, and the truth is no one knows what happened. Some say that Garstone killed the dragon, some that he pushed the dragon into the river, and the dragon swam downstream, others that Garstone simply struck a deal with the dragon to hunt in the woods and leave the livestock alone. What was never in dispute was the love between Maude and her friend. In my version the dragon kills Garstone.
