In this episode, Ricardo Karam sits down with Raymonde Angelopoulo, a beloved broadcaster who became a familiar face on Lebanese television during its golden era. Beginning her career in 1968 at Channel 9, she quickly gained fame for her impeccable French diction and engaging presence. Raymonde reminisces about her breakthrough after winning a voice-over competition, which made her voice iconic in French-language commercials and well-known programs like Visa pour la France. One of her fondest memories at Télé-Liban is tied to Georgina Rizk’s victory as Miss Universe in July 1971. “I was at Canal 9, near the AFP and Reuters servers”, she recalls. “I saw a dispatch that listed her among the ten finalists. I went live on air, announced the news, and added, ‘Wait, in a few moments, I’ll be telling you she won.’ And that’s exactly what happened. That evening, the entrance to Télé-Liban was overflowing with gifts”. Raymonde later shifted to Arabic-language shows, where she excelled, particularly in programs that empowered women. From the media world to the one of jewelry, Raymonde moved to Switzerland then Japan. After returning to Lebanon, she taught etiquette in schools for years and remains an active member of the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Society. She continues to write poems celebrating her homeland, friendship, and the gift of giving. In her free time, she enjoys cooking for her grandchildren and great-nephews and is contemplating writing a book to preserve her memories of Beirut. Despite personal tragedies, including the kidnapping and murder of her husband, Pierre, during the Lebanese Civil War, Raymonde’s resilience never faltered. She raised her two children while continuing her work in media and advocating for positive change in Lebanon.
