When the first autumn rains come Johnny Brendel waits for the unmistakable squawking and screeching that heralds the return of some familiar friends. But each year there are fewer birds and he fears the remaining seven cockies are too old to breed. Yellow-tailed black cockatoos have been migrating between lower Eyre Peninsula and the Mount Damper area on central Eyre Peninsula since well before colonial settlement. But loss of habitat through land clearance and the devastating Wangary bushfire has decimated the population. Ecologists say the only hope might be to translocate birds of the same species from the state's south east or Adelaide Hills before it's too late. 📽 Video produced by Jodie Hamilton Subscribe 🔔 http://ab.co/ABCAus-subscribe ___________________________________________ Web: http://abc.net.au/ Facebook: / abc Twitter: / abcaustralia Instagram: / abcaustralia ___________________________________________ Please note: On most of our videos, the captions/subtitles are auto-generated by YouTube.
