La fontana fu commissionata a Pietro Bernini (1562-1629), architetto dell’Acqua Vergine dal 1623 e padre del più celebre Gian Lorenzo (1598-1680) con il quale non è da escludere vi sia stata una collaborazione. Pietro Bernini progettò una fontana assolutamente nuova rispetto alle opere realizzate a Roma alla fine del XVI secolo; si ispirò, infatti, ad una barca, ideando un’opera più scultorea che architettonica. La singolare vasca a forma di imbarcazione raccoglie l’acqua che fuoriesce da due grandi soli - collocati internamente allo scafo a prua e a poppa - e quella che zampilla da un piccolo catino centrale. L’acqua straripante dai fianchi della barca, aperti in modo da offrire l’impressione che stia affondando, viene raccolta da un bacino sottostante nel quale confluiscono anche i getti provenienti da bocche di finte cannoniere poste all’esterno della prua e della poppa, ai lati dei grandi stemmi papali caratterizzati dalle api, simbolo della famiglia Barberini. The theme of the monument refers to the flood of 1598, which allowed the boats to reach the place where the fountain now stands. The unusual boat-shaped basin receives the water poured from an elongated central basin and two large suns, placed internally in the bow and stern of the hull.
