The mechanism of reaction between ethene and bromine is an electrophilic addition reaction. During the reaction, one of the bromine atoms receives a partial positive charge. The bromine water test is a qualitative test used to identify the alkene or alkane functional groups present in the compound. Alkene groups react with bromine water in the dark condition and undergo an addition reaction to give a decolourised solution. The bromine water test is used to assess if an alkene or alkyne does have an unsaturated carbon-carbon bond. The test employs an addition reaction, in which a reactant, in this case, bromine, is introduced to an organic molecule in a way to destroy a double or triple bond.
