Daylight Saving time is coming next week and I was curious to find out why we change our clocks. The reason might not be what you think. Stay tuned… Daylight Saving time, often referred to as Daylight Savings time beings March 13th for those of us who change our clocks. I’m not a huge fan of the change. At the height of the summer here in Chicagoland, it’s light until almost 9pm. I’m an early bird so I’d rather have that extra hour of daylight in the morning. So why do we change the clocks? I always thought like many of you that it was for our farmers so they could maximize daylight time during regular waking hours. In actuality, farmers hated it and lobbied hard against it. The sun, not the clock, dictated schedules. So when the clocks changed, they had to wait an extra hour for the dew to evaporate before they could harvest hay and an extra hour before cows were ready to be milked. Germany was the first to institute “Summer Time” to conserve electricity during WW1. In 1919, the US repealed Daylight Saving time but it returned during WWII and nationally repealed again when WWII ended. But states could still begin and end daylight saving time whenever they wanted. It was reported that passengers traveling 35 miles between Ohio and West Virginia passed through 7 time changes. In 1966, Uniform Time Act was passed standardizing when clocks would be changed. From what I learned it seems that retailers benefit the most from the change. People are more likely to shop later when it’s still light out which increases. Advocates claim that there are fewer car accidents so then why change the clocks back? Some reports claim it reduces energy consumption but with air conditioners running more during waking hours, this has been pretty much proven false. Either way, I think we should stick to one time and leave it…whether it’s one hour ahead or back, just leave it alone. I’m interested to hear your opinions on this so please post comments below.
