John D. Sheridan’s 1945 novel ‘Paradise Alley’ tells the story of a national school teacher (and later principal) based in a Dublin Docklands school . The narrative takes place across four decades , from the early 20th century until the 'Emergency' in the 1940's. What made the novel so fascinating was that it was based on fact . JD Sheridan had been a teacher at the Wharf School on the East Wall Road , and turned his own experiences and those related by others into this book . The community of 'Paradise Alley' is a barely disguised East Wall , the description of the school building is identical to the one established here in 1895, and many of those who appear are based on real people . Historic events, such as the 1913 Lockout are depicted , and incidents such as a fist-fight with a parent, rivalry between the teachers etc can be identified from school records and inspectors reports. We are delighted to present this wonderful short film featuring an extract from the early pages of the novel - a vivid description of the locality , and the previously mentioned fist-fight. Performed by Brendan Laird . Recorded at Abbey Creative Studio.
