George Chuvalo vs Manuel Ramos 26.9.1968 (Highlights)

Canadian Heavyweight Champion, George Chuvalo, faces Mexican Heavyweight Champion, Manuel Ramos, in a bloody 5 round contest. The fight actually took place in 1968, not 1969, as the video voiceover incorrectly states. More info below... Manuel Ramos is considered by some to be the greatest Mexican heavyweight boxer of all time, even if his early career is shrouded in mystery. The exact details of his earlier fights are not that well recorded but officially he made his professional debut in 1963 winning the Mexican Heavyweight title by 1st Rd KO. Ramos had a good first year as a pro going undefeated in 5 fights but then throughout 1964 and 1965 he had a bad run and failed to win a fight, his record dropping to a very average 5-5-2. But then surprisingly from 1966 onwards his career took off and he went on a 14 win streak, winning 11 by KO, to establish himself as a serious contender for the World Heavyweight title. His 3 biggest wins during this time were a split decision over highly rated veteran Eddie Machen, knocking out up and coming prospect James J Woody and then earning a unanimous points win over former World Heavyweight Champion, Ernie Terrell. His recent spate of success earned Ramos a shot at the World Heavyweight title, now held by Joe Frazier. In June 1968 Ramos and Frazier squared off in a short but furious contest, in Rd 1 it appeared Ramos may have had the better of Frazier and even staggered him with an uppercut but then in Rd 2 Frazier went for the early finish, knocking Ramos down twice and forcing him to quit at the end of the round. Ramos's stock was still high however, and a number of boxing critics still rated him highly even after the loss. In his next fight Ramos would score a 4th Rd TKO against Marty Franklin, bringing his record up to 21-7-2. Chuvalo had been boxing a long time by 1968, having turned pro all the way back in 1956. He was one of Canada's greatest boxers, being a 3 x Canada Heavyweight Champion and a 2 x World title challenger. He possessed one of the best chins in the business and had never been dropped in 67 contests. He had fought a variable who's who of the boxing world and always gave a good account of himself. He had fought Pat McMurtry, Yvon Durelle, Pete Rademacher, Bob Cleroux, Willi Besmanoff, Joe Erskine, Mike DeJohn, Tony Alongi, Zora Folley, Doug Jones, Floyd Patterson, Ernie Terrell, Joe Bygraves, Muhammad Ali, Oscar Bonavena and Joe Frazier! Chuvalo's professional record stood at 51-14-2 and he was not afraid of anybody.... Chuvalo entered the contest with more top level experience but Ramos was 5 years younger and had taken a lot less punishment. Both men possessed quality chins and both had knock out power so fans were divided as to the outcome of the contest. For the first 4 rounds both men traded shots back and forward, cutting each other wide open, Chuvalo on the side of his nose and Ramos from a cut above his eye. Chuvalo stalked his younger opponent while Ramos bounced around trying not to stay too long in one place. In Rd 5 Chuvalo caught Ramos completely off guard ending a beautiful 5 punch combo with a stiff right hand that Ramos did not see coming and it dropped him on the seat of his pants. Ramos got up quick enough but he didn't look as light on his feet so Chuvalo pounced, trapping Ramos against the ropes repeatedly and unleashing a barrage of punches until eventually Ramos could not defend himself anymore forcing the ref to stop the fight. Ramos's career could not recover from the loss and he took a year off from the sport to regather himself. Although Ramos did pick up a decision win against Tony Doyle on his return in 1969, he would only win 2 of 24 fights over the next 8 years... Ramos did fight some top names in those final years, Chuck Wepner, Joe Bugner, Oscar Bonavena, Juergen Blin, Jack Bodell, Ron Stander, Ron Lyle, Duane Bobick and Bernardo Mercado to name a few, but his best years were long gone and even his once powerful chin was failing to keep him on his feet. Ramos retired in 1977 following a 2nd Rd KO loss to Bob Hazleton. His final record stood at 24-29-3, a sad ending to one of Mexico's greatest heavyweights.
