Kyosho Mini-Z MR-03VE: Unusual Brushless 90mm Build

Today, we are taking a look at a Mini-Z MR-03 I'm building at 90mm and experimenting with a few things. I did a few odd things I will go through in this video. Some work, but some are probably terrible ideas. This is the Subaru 2002 WRC autoscale body, at 90mm wheelbase and designed for 1.5mm offset narrow wheels all around and narrow front track. It also says "Sammy" in one of the decals! You might notice that this is not an ordinary MR-03. This is the older MR-03VE which was the brushless model before EVO. Eugene gave me this as potential materials for video content. Thanks! It's been a lot of fun to try something new. Since the chassis came with a wide front and I didn't have the narrow top plate, I thought negative offset rims could help. But -1 narrow rims are nearly extinct since the days of MR-02 which couldn't do narrow track. Luckily DXR produces -1mm offset rims in both narrow and wide. With 0.4mm shims, the rims clear MR-03's front suspension arms. At effectively -0.6mm offset, the hub is noticeably located partially inside the rim. This reduces the steering scrub radius. It's important to check wheel clearance carefully on a car intended to run on a track. On a track, because the car undergoes quite a bit of acceleration, braking and hard turns, the body leans more than expected. After installing and testing the right wheels for the 90mm body, let's look at the suspension setup. I put in purple (medium soft) front springs, plus flipping the king pins, to encourage more consistent front traction and steering. Also, the knuckles are 1 degree camber to support sharper turns. In general, I find MR-03 tend to understeer in stock form. As a result, the front suspension is pretty smooth. The rebound rate should work fine on a track. Normally, this body would run narrow front with 1.5mm offset rims. Here, we can see the -0.4mm instead. In the rear, rather than the standard plastic RM pod, I'm trying out a discontinued PN 90-94mm pod in an interesting Mid-Mount configuration. At 90mm as configured here, the motor needs to sit higher than the usual Rear-Mount, but it has the advantage of more centralized weight distribution. It's got a damper disk but I haven't mounted a shock. One major issue I ran into with this PN pod was it didn't give enough ground clearance for the rear wheels to clear this body. As a workaround, I mounted the pod under the t-plate, rather than above it as usual. This change allowed the wheels to clear the body cleanly, but also lowered the ground clearance further as seen here. On an even surface, the car drives fine, but I can imagine on bumpier surface, it's going to catch and cause havoc. I may have to go back to the plastic RM pod I already have unless I find a better solution for this issue. Rear suspension still works okay here. Overall this is weird and ill-advised, but it looks pretty cool. MR-03VE runs the older ASF radio protocol. Since I didn't have one, Eugene made sure I could still drive this car with this KO EX-1 UR. I started getting serious with RC only 3 years ago so I'd never seen high end gear like this from more than 10 years ago. To support ASF, there's a Mini-Z ASF module installed on the back. For someone inexperienced like me, this isn't the most user-friendly device to use but the driving feels quite dialed in. It's also possible to configure the MR-03VE ESC and VE via the VE ICS Manager. It's similar to EVO but with fewer options. So how does the car drive on wood? This is not a demanding condition, but it's a good for some basic sanity checks. First, the car drives smoothly. There's no binding with the drivetrain or with the body. Steering lock to lock is good, but it feels sloppy compared to a fresh MR-03. I'm going to upgrade the servo gears and tie rod. It's got standard Kyosho low profile 30-deg slick front, and 20-deg wide radial rear. With NiMH AAA power, 3500kv brushless, and 9T pinion, top speed isn't crazy fast but acceleration is great. I really want to try this on a track and feel how it performs compared this 90mm MM to a 90mm RM setup. This is Sammy and thanks for watching!
