WH Fans are a great substitute to air conditioning as long on as the temperatures outside of the house are cooler than inside. This also helps push out the hot air in the attic to help reverse the temperature gradient. In this video shows how to install a whole house (WH) fan in the attic. Here is a link to where you can find a video in which I explain how to select the proper size WH fan for your home: • How to Size and Select a Whole House Fan ... Basic Instructions: -size fan according to house SF & attic ventilation SF -test fan after un-boxing -use a mask and gloves in the attic -figure out where to install in attic -use template to cut hole for dampener box -hand fan with 90 degree bend per instruction manual -follow wiring diagram and instruction in manual -or plug into existing out for air-handler get a remote outlet and connect fan plug in it to run the system at one speed via key fob. Thank you! 8/5/2020 update: Changes Since I installed: I've installed a GE smart outlet so that i can start and stop the fan from our phones. Impression: 1) to clear cooking smell: it's absolutely great. in a few minutes, the fan exhaust out the air...we just open the sliding door in our family room, and turn the fan on. It sucks the air in, past the kitchen, up the stairs and out through the exhaust. Works like a charm. 2) for cooling down house: a) Cooling time: i) UPSTAIRS: Initially i thought that i could run it for like 30 minutes and that is it. It turns out for me to drop the temperature upstairs from 75 to same temp outside, i have to run it the full night. So when it cools down here in like around 9 or 10pm, i turn it on till 530am to get the max temperature drop...if it's 63 out side, it'll be 63 inside by then. It does still use less electricity than running an air condition. The reason I think for taking so long is because there is this huge heat gradient in the attic...so the cooler air needs to cool the insulation down so that heat stops to trickle down into the upstairs living space ii) DOWN STAIRS: when we close the up stair windows, and open the down stair windows, the lower floor cools down really fast ... like from 78 to 72 in less than an hour with outside at 68. I assume it cools down much faster down stairs is because i don't have the huge temperate differential between the 2nd and ground floor. b) the other thing we noticed...when it was the really small mosquito birth season i guess, a lot of them would get pulled into through the screen. Most all would stay at the window and die on the inside of window in the day due to the heat radiating in. Occasionally, you would find one in the bathroom on the glass or something. So for this i suggest getting pollen restricting screens for the house. This will restrict the air flow but it'll also control the pollen, dust and really small pugs that get pulled in. I have not done that yet 3) Since i did not install the multi-speed switch, i can't take advantage of the slower speed. If we had this, I could run it all night on that speed and then take advantage of the even much lower electricity draw. Slowing the air speed down before it leaves my house, might help better with the heat exchange in the air instead of it rushing to exit through the roof :)...this is on my list of things to do.
