Violence in Minnesota schools has been a hot topic over the past few months, highlighted by incidents in the St. Paul School District involving assaults by students against teachers. Osseo Area Schools haven't had those same issues, but the board has decided to make safety a priority in their preliminary budget. "The needs are intense," said Superintendent Kate Maguire. "And the needs of our students are intense. And we do have facilities that do have a wide range of age, so there are always things that need attention, not only in physical facility investments, but in safety and security." Beginning next school year, staff members at places such as Osseo Middle School will be able to communicate better with one another. The capital improvements will include investments in new handheld radios, along with equipment to strengthen their signals. The schools will also receive upgraded security cameras. In addition, the secondary schools will now have one more police resource officer on site, bringing the district's overall total to nine, with a goal of adding a 10th officer in the future. All told, district officials say these measures will help contribute to a healthy work and learning environment. "There's lots of things that happen around us, in our state and in our nation, that cause us to pay great attention to school safety and security," Maguire said. "And so I hope our community members know that we pay attention to that, we make strategic investments in that." Installation of all the new equipment will take place this summer. The superintendent expects the school board to approve the district's final budget on June 30.
