Face transplant recipient Richard Norris meets donor family that gave him a new life - TomoNews

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND — In 2012, Rebekah Aversano's family decided to donate her 21-year-old brother Josh's face for transplant after he was killed in a car accident. Josh Aversano's face including his jawbones, teeth, tongue, muscles, and nerves were transplanted to Richard Norris. In 1997 Richard Norris accidentally shot himself in the face with a shotgun. The 2012 surgery involved 150 doctors and nurses and took 36 hours. In a taped segment scheduled to air on 60 Minutes in Australia, Rebekah Aversano will see Norris with the face of her dead brother for the first time. Before the transplant, Norris had undergone more than 30 operations to try and correct the damage and restore his features. Norris was only 22 when his face 'exploded' after a fight with his mother.
