The movie follows Joel Goodsen (Tom Cruise), a high school senior from a wealthy family, who lives in the upscale North Shore area of Chicago. When his parents go away on vacation, Joel decides to have some fun and ends up hiring a call girl named Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) to spend the night with him. But things quickly spiral out of control as Joel and Lana become embroiled in a series of misadventures involving stolen property, high-speed chases, and Joel's father's expensive Porsche. As Joel tries to get his life back on track and keep his family from finding out about his wild weekend, he learns important lessons about responsibility, maturity, and the consequences of his actions.
