The piece was recorded on 1 November 2025 in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This is my third recording of the piece, but one of my favourite versions since I have my husband at the piano and we were recording in a special venue - the Endler Hall. I performed this piece the first time in 2017 at the Mabel Quick Competition on the very same Endler stage. This recording was one of those "full circle moments" for me as a singer. On Christmas Eve of 2016 my grandmother gifted me this piece which she had found amongst my great grandmother's music. It was a composition of S. le Roux Marais titled 'Die Letaba'. The text was written by my great great grandfather's youngest brother, Victor Pohl. He and S. le Roux Marais were colleagues at the University of the Free State. Needless to say this piece has a lot of sentimental value for my family and myself. The text was inspired by the Letaba river which flows through northeastern South Africa. It originates from the Limpopo mountains and flows through the Lowveld and the Kruger National Park which eventually joining the Olifants River bordering Mozambique. When listening to the piece one can hear the winding waters of the river in the pianist's playing.
