Original live video courtesy of @FOBBVCAM https://www.friendsofbigbearvalley.org/ The opinions presented on this channel do not necessarily reflect the opinions of FOBBV We are officially on Big Bear Pip Watch! Today is day 37 for egg#1 and day 34 for egg#2. Big Bear eggs typically hatch 37-40 days after laying! After the first pip is seen, there is usually a hatch 24-48 hours later! Can't wait!!!!!!!! ♥♥♥♥ Pipping is the term used when the eaglet makes its first hole in the external shell of the egg. A pip resembles a raised star pattern on the egg and up close the eggshell will be lifted up in small pieces by the eaglet's egg tooth. From the sign of the first pip to the actual hatching, it may take 24 -48 hours or longer. The standard incubation period is 35 days. Historically, the first egg here pips on day 37 and the hatching is on day 38-39. The chick uses their egg tooth to get through the egg’s inner membrane first, this is called the internal pip. This is the first time the eaglet’s lungs actually take a breath of air. Next the chick uses that same egg tooth to create a hole in the egg shell, this hole slowly gets bigger and bigger until the chick is fully hatched and free of the eggshell. During these final days before pipping, the chicks will grow rapidly inside the eggshell filling up almost the entire space. 🐣🪶 During this time, subtle changes will be seen Jackie & Shadow's behavior - they will be more attentive to the eggs, spending time looking & listening to the eggs as movement can be seen as well as soft chirps heard. Shadow may begin stocking the pantry with fish in anticipation of the eaglet hatching. In the video we have both Jackie & Shadow bringing in fluff, & sticks! We had several zooms on the eggs and no pip is seen yet - but keep in mind our view is limited with the depth of the nest and the sticks surrounding it so we may not always see the pip right away. Jackie gives Shadow beakies & soft vocals as they both are feeling anticipation right along with all us viewers!! at 17:09 Shadow is on Cactus Snag and a Common Raven joins him. Shadow ignores the raven until it begins to swoop! Thank you for watching!
