After experiencing a very painful loss in my own personal life, I decided to write a song to honor their memory. And that became "City by the Sea". As hard as it is, I think our loved ones wouldn't want their deaths to completely destroy us. They wouldn't want us to be so devastated that we cease to go on living our own lives. They'd want us to remember them warmly, to go on and carry their memory forward, not become stuck in time and just crumble beneath the grief of it all. So that's what this is about. Trying to wrestle with that pain, while keeping the memory of your loved one alive and carrying that hope that you'll meet again someday.
