Es ging wieder einmal in das schöne Elsass für mich, wozu ich Dank der freundschaftlichen Bande mit meinen französchen Modellbau-Kollegen immer öfter Gelegenheit habe. So sieht gelebte Völkerverständigung aus! Bevor es wieder auf eine Modellbau-Ausstellung ging wurde ich zu einer Besichtung von Fort Frère (ehemals Fort Großherzog von Baden) bei Straßburg eingeladen, wofür ich dem Förderverein "Club Sportif et Artistique de la Garnison de Strasbourg" sehr dankbar bin. Leider hatte ich mit technischen Problemen zu kämpfen, weshalb ich auf meine Ersatzkamera zurückgreifen musste, welche bei nicht idealen Lichtverhältnissen sehr schnell an ihre Grenzen stößt. Im schummrigen Licht innerhalb der Festung und in der Dämmerung hatte ich meine Mühen, aber ich möchte es mir nicht nehmen lassen euch trotzdem ein paar Impressionen dieser sehr imposanten Festung zu zeigen. Ich hoffe das Ergebnis gefällt, trotz der geringeren Qualität der Photos. Es handelt sich bei diesem Fort um eines von insgesamt 19 Werken, welche vom Deutschen Reich zwischen 1871 und 1890 als Festungsgürtel rund um die Stadt Straßburg angelegt wurden. Das Fort "Großherzog von Baden" entstand zwischen 1872 und 1875 und ist eines der am besten erhaltenen "Biehlerschen Einheitsforts" (entwickelt vom preußischen General Hans Alexis von Biehler). Es handelt sich hierbei um die letzten Vertreter gemauerter Forts, welche schon ab den 1880er Jahren wegen der sich rasant weiterentwickelnden Artillerie praktisch als veraltet galten. Betonierte Forts, wie etwa die "Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II." bei Mutzig, wurden zum neuen Standard. Da sich die Kämpfe im Ersten Weltkrieg in einiger Entfernung von Straßburg abspielten, blieb der Festungsgürtel rund um die Stadt vom Krieg unberührt. Die Bauten wurden als Lager und Unterkünfte für Kriegsgefangene verwendet. Heutzutage sind vier Festungen für Besichtigungen zugänglich und werden von ehrenamtlichen Helfern instand gehalten. Die Bewahrung von Bauten dieser Größe ist keine leichte Aufgabe, somit haben sich alle Helfer viel Dank und Anerkennung verdient! Thats how international understanding looks like! Before i attended another model show in the region i was invited to a tour through Fort Frère (formally Fort Grand Duke of Baden) near Strasbourg. My special thanks go to the booster club "Club Sportif et Artistique de la Garnison de Strasbourg". Unfortunately i had to struggle with technical problems, so i could only use my reserve camera for this, which reaches its limits rather quickly in non-ideal light conditions. The dim light inside the fort and the twilight at dusk made it not an easy task, but i felt obliged to show you a few impressions of this imposing fort anyway. I hope you like the result, although the quality of the photos is not as high as usual. This fort was part of a circle of 19 fortifications, which were built around the city of Strasbourg by the German Empire between 1871 and 1890. The fort "Grand Duke of Baden) was built between 1872 and 1875 and is one of the best preserved "Biehler standard forts" (developed by the Prussian general Hans Alexis von Biehler). Those forts were the last ones built out of bricks, which became obsolete during the 1880s already thanks to the rapid improvements in artillery technology. Concrete forts, like "Fort Emperor William II." near Mutzig, became the new standard. Since the battles of the First World War did not take place near Strasbourg the ring of forts around the city was not touched by it. The facilities were used as depots and as accommodations for prisoners of war. Nowadays four forts are accessible to the public and are maintained by volunteers. The preservation of buildings of that size is not a simple task, so all the volunteers deserve our gratitude and appreciation!
