Butterfly, snake and sandy beach. Robert Crown Memorial State Beach is our next stop. It is located on the East side of San Francisco Bay between Alameda Naval Air Station and Oakland International Airport. In the early years of the 19th century, it was known as “Coney Island of the West”, for its long stretch of sand (probably longest in the entire Bay Area), warm water (although quite contaminated by now), and for its multiple social events like concerts, beach games, carnival rides and so on. While walking on a sidewalk along the beach, we noticed a swallowtail butterfly with a large abdomen. It was flapping its wings frequently while flying from one plant to another, apparently ready to lay eggs. Butterflies can be quite selective in terms of the plant species they lay eggs on. Swallowtail caterpillars like to gorge on parsleys. In California, this species is known to have few generations from Spring to Fall, and people who grow the butterflies as a hobby search for their tiny round-shaped eggs on the plants like fennel or anise.
