As trade tensions between Australia and China escalate, there is growing concern about the potential impact of a trade boycott. In this video, Tim Harcourt, J.W. Nevile Fellow in Economics at UNSW Business School, discusses how China's trade restrictions on Australian barley and beef exports could affect both countries. Harcourt argues that while Australia might feel the initial impact, the boycott could hurt China more due to its critical need for food security, energy security, and quality education for its growing population. Harcourt also highlights Australia's diversification strategy, with exports increasingly being directed to India, Japan, South Korea, and other regions, making the country less reliant on any one trading partner. He explains why diplomacy and support from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will be crucial in resolving tensions, and why an international coronavirus enquiry is in the interests of both China and the global community.
