Marid Castle is a historic military fortress located in the city of Dumat Al-Jandal. The earliest mention of it is in the third century A.D., when Zenobia, the queen of Palmyra, invaded Dumat Al-Jandal and Tayma but could not break into the castle. Excavations carried out at the lower part of the castle in 1976 revealed some Nabataean and Roman ceramics dating back to the first and second centuries A.D. The fortress has four conical towers in its four corners The foundations of the castle’s towers were built of stone, while the upper parts were built with bricks. The castle is surrounded by a passageway that is open from all sides except the northwest. At the end of the passageway to the east, there is a 34-meter-deep stone well with a diameter of about 70 centimeters.
