One of my assumptions about the transverse abdominis is that it works in conjunction with the respiratory diaphragm. And while I still think that's true there is also an important interaction between the transverse abdominis and the overlying obliques and rectus abdominis. In this video I talk about how when you activate your transverse abdominis to pull your belly inwards, past the border of your ribcage and pelvis, (and assuming your keep your ribcage and pelvis stationary) you lengthen the fibers of the obliques and rectus abdominis. As a result, the obliques and/or rectus abdominis can activate to resist being lengthened. So, activating your transverse abdominis is a way of also activating the overlying abdominal muscles. As a result it can be used to help stabilize your torso. Note that another advantage of being able to activate your transverse abdominis is that you can easily use it in a wide variety of spinal bending positions making it easier to control your midsection in these positions.
