European XFEL - A microscope for molecular movies

The European XFEL is a 3.4-kilometre-long X-ray source. At the city border of Hamburg (Germany) it generates extremely short and intense X-rays pulses. Up to 2700 of these pulses can be generated per second. In this webinar, we explain how the X-ray laser works and what it can be used for. At the European XFEL, seven specialized instruments follow a wide range of scientific projects. We study the basic interaction of atoms to form molecules, see how proteins interact with light or medicine in the cells or investigate states of matter that occur inside the big planets like Saturn and Jupiter. We give a short overview of the technology and science at the European XFEL.
