Elvina's Story - A Day in the Life of a Midwife in Tanzania

Elvina Makongolo is the midwife at Mtowisa Health Centre, Rukwa, Tanzania who works around the clock to give pregnant women the care they need. She knows only too well the risks these women face in giving birth so far from the life saving equipment required in emergencies. WRA Tanzania (WRATZ) has been tracking the progress of President Kikwete's commitment to the women of Tanzania. The President has promised that 50% of health centres will provide comprehensive emergency obstetric care. In Rukwa region there are 10 health centres, and WRA research shows that not one of them provides this level of care.
