Located in the county of Cumbria (although historically in Cumberland), and around eight miles east, and slightly north, of Carlisle is the town of Brampton. Geographically, Brampton is situated just south of the River Irthing, and in the vicinity of Hadrian's Wall, whose path runs 2-3 miles north of the town centre. The original Anglo-Saxon settlement, dating from the 7th century or earlier, was closer still to Hadrian's Wall, but was forced to relocate entirely about a mile to the southeast to make way for the local lord's deer park. In 1252 Henry III granted Brampton a market charter. The market was centred around where the Moot Hall stands today (featured at the beginning of the walk). The present building dates from 1817, and was built to replace an earlier incarnation from the 17th century which had been used to house 48 prisoners in 1648 during the English Civil War. In 1745 Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, visited Brampton for one night during the Jacobite Rising while his army besieged Carlisle. The Mayor of Carlisle surrendered the keys to the city to the prince in front of the house in which he way staying. At the western end of the town centre is the Parish Church of St Martin. This dates from the 1870s, and was built on the site of a 17th-century hospital that had been converted into a chapel in 1789. It is the only church designed by the Pre-Raphaelite architect Philip Webb, and is Grade I listed. In 1836 the railway arrived in Brampton. The initial station was part of a branch line whose trains were horse-drawn. The station of today forms part of the Tyne Valley Line, which runs between Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
