One person was confirmed killed and 108 others injured after a transit train crashed into New Jersey's Hoboken station during the morning rush hour Thursday. The person killed in the crash was a woman standing on the platform, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said at a press conference, adding that the victim was killed by debris. She was later identified by the New Jersey State Medical Examiner's Office as 34-year-old Fabiola Bittar de Kroon, who was from Hoboken. Among the 108 injured, 74 of them were hospitalized, he added. Authorities from the Hoboken University Medical Center said they received 22 patients from the crash, including five with lacerations and three fractures. Jersey City Medical Center officials said that they have seen 40 walk-in patients from the crash, with 11 patients in the emergency department. "Initial reports indicate multiple critical injuries," said the New Jersey Transit in a statement. The Chinese Consulate General in New York confirmed that one Chinese citizen was injured in the incident. The Consulate General said that the Chinese has received initial treatment at a hospital, and that the injuries were not life-threatening. It has also contacted the family of the injured. Witnesses of the incident recall the moments surrounding the crash. "What we saw was they were evacuating the area. I did see one guy that was actually on the train that was all, you know, his shirt was ripped, and his hair was all messed up. I talked to him for a second, but he was shaken up, traumatized," said Mike, the owner of the Green Rock restaurant nearby. "Like a bomb sound... Then folks start running away... So I ran out, and when I looked to the right, I just saw bodies," said William Blaine, a train engineer from Norfolk Southern. He also described the chaos after the crash. "I saw debris, iron. I looked and I saw dust in this guy's hair. He tried to get up. I saw another person bleeding, so I went to help them out, but a couple of people got to them first to help them. So I looked over and I saw the train in the wall," Blaine said. Several fast food stores and bars close to the scene put out free coffee and mineral water on the roadside for the emergency response staff. Meanwhile, the engineer involved in the train crash was in critical condition and cooperating with investigators, said the New Jersey Governor Christie, adding that no signs so far indicate that the crash was anything but a "tragic accident." Preliminary reports suggest that the crash was an accident or caused by operator error, though the investigation is still at an early stage. The train plowed into Hoboken station just before 9:00 local time (1300 GMT) with about 250 passengers on board. The station, which sits 11 kilometers outside New York City, is a hub for those transferring to Manhattan. A large part of the station roof collapsed amid heavy and extensive damage to the train and the station due to the crash. Social media pictures show twisted piles of metal and bricks as well as other debris scattered across the platform. The U.S. Department of Transportation said federal rail investigators have arrived on site. All rail services have been suspended in and out of Hoboken after the crash.
