Rose Hill plantation is located in Union, South Carolina. It was the home of William Henry Gist who was the 68th Governor of South Carolina. Gist was a States Rights advocate who believed in the right to own slaves. Gist was a signer of the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession in 1860 that brought about the beginning of the Civil War in 1861. Gist owned as many as 178 slaves at one time and the plantation consisted of about 2000 acres. The plantation now is 44 acres and is absolutely beautiful. Inside the mansion contains period pieces and also original pieces as well. The grounds are immaculate and have formal gardens as well as two hundred year old Southern Magnolia trees. The trip to tour the plantation is well worth your time and the park rangers that work there are very helpful and professional.
