In March 1992 ABC TV reporter Tim Palmer exposed two NSW police officers who thought it funny to attend a charity party wearing blackface and with nooses around their necks. They were dressed they said as the aboriginal men Lloyd Boney and David Gundy. Lloyd Boney was found dead in a police cell in outback NSW and David Gundy was shot dead by police in Sydney after being wrongly identified as a suspect. The deaths were included in the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, and at least one of the officers involved gave evidence at that inquiry. The story sparked national and international outrage, and Prime Minister Paul Keating demanded it be a turning point in race relations in Australia.
