Whether navigating the DMV or the classroom, executive functioning skills are a necessary tool for our everyday lives. Unfortunately, many students, especially those with ADHD, struggle with these skills. Here, Elissa Monteiro unpacks what executive functioning truly is and how we can help these students earlier on in their lives. Elissa Monteiro is a fourth year PhD candidate in School Psychology at the University of California Riverside. Her research broadly focuses on refining the assessment of executive functioning and evaluating novel interventions for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families. Her practical work with students in schools has inspired the formulation of several research questions and novel ideas around how best to support the development of executive function skills that predict students’ behavioral, socioemotional, and academic challenges. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
