We're down at Dromore Co Down to take in the sights and sounds and film a few interesting places around the town. Way back when, Dromore was of strategic importance because it commanded the crossing point over the river Lagan. This route was used when moving armed forces north and south from places like Carrickfergus to Dublin and beyond. And so we have the massive John de Courcy Norman defence the 'Mound' or the Motte and Bailey overlooking the river Lagan. Hundreds of years later we have the punishment block or the 'Stocks' being set up in the town to sort out the crimian element. Decades later the railway appeared and a bridge was needed to transport the trains across the Lagan valley and so we have the Dromore Viaduct built by Jackson in 1860. It still remains solid today. The river Lagan of course provided the water power for the linen mills dotted along the valley. Fertile drumlin fields fed farm animals and grew wheat corn and flax. Dromore was always a market town hub of agricultural commerce. I remember passing through Dromore many times on the bus as a lad. Later all grown up I transfered to a Honda 750 motorbike and today it is the car. Many of my school chums at Banbridge Academy came from Dromore. Robbie Gracey, the Lyle twins, Will Gamble, John Wilkinson, ( former head of Dromore Secondary ), the Pepper brothers, big Lawrence Gibson who you heard before you saw. Where have they all gone?
