Aneurysms are considered to be a deadly disease. It needs immediate intervention and treatment to save the life of a patient. Brain aneurysms are common in adult males lying between age group of 25 to 60 years but it can occur at any age. Risk factors related to formation of aneurysm are smoking, high blood pressure, high fat diet, over weight and family history but definitive cause is still not known. Most of the patients with aneurysm come to the hospital after it ruptures in the brain. Most of them, come in unconscious state whereas some patients present with sudden severe headache not relieved by analgesics . Some patients may come to doctor with eye problems like pain while looking at light (Photophobia) or double vision. In our country, only few patients are diagnosed with un-ruptured aneurysms, due to lack of knowledge and lack of medical facilities in rural areas. After coming to the hospital, treatment starts with stabilisation of the patient. Once, patient is stabilised, CT head is done and we look for spilled blood inside the brain. After getting CT head, CT cerebral angiography is done to exactly know about the location, size & shape of the aneurysm. After knowing all about morphology of the aneurysm, further definitive treatment plan is made. Now a days, two treatment options are available for aneurysm depending upon the size, shape, location of aneurysm and condition of the patient. Most of the patients are first given option for Endovascular coiling. This is a latest technique where a guide wire is passed through the artery in the thigh. It is taken to the neck of aneurysm and aneurysm cavity is filled with a material which reduces the risk of rupture to almost nil. This technique carries low risk and no open wound is made to the patient. Many patients of aneurysmal bleed are not fit for endovascular coiling due to unfavourable shape , large amount of blood spilled out in brain or location of the aneurysm . These patients are given second treatment option i.e. open surgery, in the form of aneurysmal clipping. Here, open surgery of brain is done and aneurysm is clipped. As far now, there is no definitive medical treatment for ruptured aneurysms, however sometimes, we can observe and follow small unruptured aneurysms. Recovery rate after treatment of aneurysm depends upon pre-surgical condition of the patient. If patient is conscious before surgery, outcome is good. If patient presents in unconscious state, chances of recovery are still better in good hands. Treatment plans, outcomes may be different for all the patients but one should definitely go for the treatment as once patient recovers, he or she is cured forever of this deadly disease and can live a normal life later on.
