Borges: Being a traitor is to 'kneel before Cuba'

(29 Aug 2017) The leader of Venezuela's opposition and president of the National Assembly, Julio Borges, equated treason "to kneel before Cuba or any other foreign government," in a clear reference to Cuba's support of President Nicolas Maduro. Speaking to journalists after a session of the national Assembly at the Legislative Palace in Caracas, Borges responded to a direct threat from Maduro last week. The president vowed to charge and prosecute for treason opponents he accused of being behind new economic sanctions, pointing a finger in particular at Borges, as the purported "mastermind" of the financial and economic "blockade." Regarding a possible dialogue between the government and the opposition being facilitated by Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the former Spain's PM, Borges said the only way to change Venezuela's current reality is to "have the goodwill to change the things in the country."
