I had a decent night’s sleep in Barstow and the continental breakfast was ok, coffee decent. The tub looked inviting but dangerous for me to get in and out of so I opted for a long hot shower with the stream mostly on my lower back. I don’t have a long day planned. Probably 5-6 hours on the road including stops and I only plan to get to St .George, Utah, which will put me in a good position for \Moab and some touristy things including camping. It is all going to be super slab today. Temperature will be 104 F/40 C and slightly above. Lot’s of hydration and using cooling techniques like keeping my shirt and dew rag wet. The days are getting noticeably shorter and losing time crossing time zones heading east. Today I am starting in California, passing through Nevada and just getting into Utah. I lose an hour when I hit the Utah border. A lot of the ride will be flat desert and a bit of white line fever. In 2008, I rode this going the opposite way. Nanci was on the back and we did it overnight to escape the deadly 113 degree heat of the day before. I get to St. George as the sun gets very low in the sky and at low speed, when I was blinded, I ran into the back of a car. My left foot got caught under the saddlebag and I did hurt it. The EMTs suggested that I go to the hospital but even with good insurance, I did not want to get caught up in the paperwork. I also did not want the bike and trailer to be towed as I did not trust getting as good a service as I had gotten in Victoria. I spent three nights in St. George and did my own hydro therapy in the pool several times a day. Unfortunately, I did not check out the bike as carefully as I should have. .
